Morning Greetings

The Big Boss: Good morning, Kenna. How are you?

Me: Sore.

The Big Boss: ...

When you ask someone how they are, do you really expect an answer? Do you really care?

Cinco de Mayo

I've been getting an inordinate number of hits based on people searching Google images for Cinco de Mayo. Last year I wished y'all a Happy Cinco de Mayo and used an image from Google, thus the hits. I think.

But seeing that today is April 5, that means that Cinco de Mayo is just one month away. And this year Cinco de Mayo takes on an even greater significance. I have decided that Thursday, May 5 - Cinco de Mayo - shall be the start of my 40th birthday celebration.

I've never been a big birthday person, but I've been thinking and talking about turning 40 for most of the past year. I don't want to be one of those people that moans and complains about turning 40. I want to celebrate it.

You heard about my party on February 11. The owner of the restaurant where that party was held has already told me that he is planning a Cinco de Mayo celebration. My birthday is actually May 9, and as of May 2 I am supposed to be officially on vacation. So, why not start the birthday celebration on May 5?

If any of you want to join me for my weekend long birthday bash, let me know!

Tried posting this yesterday but Blogger kept kicking my ass and I have a feeling it may continue to do so today.

Shuffle Me This

Eureka! I think I've got it!

For weeks now, I've been trying to get me a gravatar. Now that I've outed myself by showing The Face (and The Body) I figured I might as well step all the way through the door and associate The Face with all of my blogging interactions - posts and comments.

I created my gravatar and got a rating and then ... nothing. I followed the directions on how to enable gravatars when using Blogger, and since I use Haloscan as my comment host, I went there to see if there was a switch that needed to be flipped. I found my way easily enough to the Beta settings tab and tried to plunk down my gravatar URL.

Ran into a little glitch - the URL was too long. No problem. Being the resourceful gal that I am, I went into the Haloscan forums and queried the good folks there. Someone pointed me to tinyurl.com so I skipped over there and got a (you guessed it) tinyurl for my gravatar.

Back to Haloscan and drop in my new tinyurl. Nothing happens. I give up for a week or so. But then I see that in addition to Maria, now Amanda and Scooterdeb and John have gravatars. I simply cannot be left out!

I try again. Create a new gravatar. Snag a tinyurl. Put the link in the Haloscan settings. Suddenly I have a gravatar! But wait ... it's a default gravatar. Now every comment without a gravatar has The Face staring back from it. Not what I wanted. I trash the tinyurl and fret and fume some more. I do NOT want to have to ask for help.

But earlier today I caved and asked Maria for help. She said that she didn't do anything via Haloscan and asked me if I had uploaded my photo to gravatar.com. Yup, been there, done that. But I'll go back and look again.

So I go to gravatar.com and I surf through the site again. I see that they are having a contest to win an iPod Shuffle, and all you have to do to enter is to write a post about something related to the blogosphere, and include at least one mention of gravatars. Apparently that was just the motivation I needed, because all of a sudden it dawned on me ...

... when I created my gravatar, I had to set up an account using my email address. My gravatar was linked to my email address! I went back and checked my blogger account. You guessed it - the email address did not match!

When I created my blog on January 31, 2004 I didn't have a GMail account. Because GMail was launched on April 1, 2004. Exactly one year ago today. My Blogger account still used my old myway.com email address. By making sure that my Blogger account was updated with my current GMail address, I believe I have solved the problem of the missing gravatar.

After all this, it would be a cruel April Fools Day joke not to reward me with that free iPod shuffle. Especially since I've had such bad luck scoring winning Pepsi caps.

Letting Go

Why is it so hard to let go of things?

I'm back in the office after being out for most of the last two days, and I was just rummaging through one of my drawers looking for a return address label so I could order some plants (because God forbid I actually be doing real work here in the office). In the drawer is a small blue Tiffany's box that I can't seem to throw away.

A few years ago I organized several sessions at a conference, and as a thank you I was given a Tiffany's pen - complete with the blue box, tied with ribbon. I never undid the ribbon. Instead, I carefully slid the ribbon off the box and replaced it after I had extracted the pen from the soft bag nestled atop the cotton inside the box. And for at least two years, the box has been in my drawer because I can't seem to throw away that little blue box.

What is it? Is it the status symbol of the box that I don't want to lose? That immediately identifiable color that says "Oohhh ... Tiffany's!" It was at least a year before I even took the pen out. It was so nice I didn't want to use it, or lose it. Why do we do that? Why do we save things? Erma Bombeck wrote a column once after she learned she had cancer and talked about all the things she would have done differently, and one of the things she said was "I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage." What good do things do you wrapped up in a closet somewhere? Use your china and crystal and celebrate today.

I just threw the box in the garbage.

Funny Farm

So I'm doing a little bit of research to find out how many points I'll get for this speeding ticket (if I'm found guilty; I plead not guilty and asked for my day in court) and I came across the FAQ Farm site.

Run, Trucklet, Run!

My darling Trucklet had a check-up on Wednesday. She got new oil and new windshield wipers and her tires rotated and air pressure checked and so on. This morning I filled her up with gas and whispered in her ear "Go, baby - run home to mom and dad." And off she went.

She was so happy to be free and on the road. I popped in my Jack Johnson CD and soon we were cruising on the back road. Just up ahead, Trucklet spied some bigger trucks and, having been stuck in the driveway with an elderly, sedate Town & Country van for most of the winter, she was so excited that she sped up a little to catch up with the Big Boys. She didn't want to pass them, she just wanted to cruise along behind.

We were winding our way along the road, when all of a sudden the truck in front of us slowed down and pulled over to the shoulder. He didn't stop or really even apply his brakes, and I thought he was just pulling over to answer his cell phone. Then he pulled back into traffic and I happened to glance up to the rear view mirror.

Uh-oh.

The sheriff was right behind me, lights a blazing. I pulled over, turned down the stereo and waited to see if the deputy was cute. When SHE approached my window to ask for my driver's license, registration and insurance, I knew I was in trouble. She said I'd been doing 69 in a 55 (hey, at least I settled into a sexy speed ...) and without further ado, went back and wrote me up a ticket.

Bitch.

Catching up on my Pepsi bottle cap scorecard. A loser yesterday and another one today.

Started deleting mail in my in-box, and I'm going to try to keep things down to one screen's worth. Never did double check those figures for administration back in September; probably won't get around to doing it now. Never did get back to Nina about helping her with her herb festival web site; probably won't get around to doing it now.

Probably should start hauling out my personal effects piece by piece so it won't be overwhelming and noticeable when I do vacate the premises. It's amazing the crap you accumulate ... the memo holder, the Hallmark card organizer box, the desk lamp, the jar candle, the mini cd/radio boom box, the artificial flower arrangement, the plants ... all personal touches that make your office space comfy.

I'd stock up on office supplies, but I already have a full box of pens, tape, rulers, 100 meg zip disks (that I'm not sure I can even read anymore - the zip drive in my laptop only accepts 250 meg disks, I think - and now even the zip disks are obsolete - all I need is my trusty $25 memory stick), paper clips and staples at home.

Suddenly, I am exhausted. Change - sucks the life out of you. Or maybe it was that cardio kickboxing class last night. Kicked my ass, that's for sure. I suppose I should get used to it - my goal is to get in shape and run a 5K by early June. Wish me luck.

P.S. for John: You've been on my mind. Will email you separately to see if there is some way we can connect when you are up this way on April 18.

I Think Not

Spring? I don't think so.

Six inches of wet, heavy snow last night. Me, I wake up with a hormone headache. Really didn't want to walk to work this morning, but I'll be damned if I'm going to tackle the two foot wall of snow at the end of the driveway.

Phil had his girlfriend sleep over last night. If he couldn't get up and shovel a path for her when she left at 6:30 this morning, then I'll be damned if I go out there and shovel a path for his use later.

And while I'm grumbling ... His daughter slept over last night because Phil's wife had an early morning meeting. I don't have any problem with that, but why did he feel compelled to have the girlfriend come over and sleep with him last night as well? Especially since he'd spent the night at her place on Tuesday. Just irritating the hell out of me.

Ivy League

Un. Frickin. Believable.

So here I am, getting fired from this podunk state school. Yesterday, I get a call. From an Ivy League institution. Inviting me to have an informal discussion about some upcoming openings.

I have an interview next Monday.

I'm Taking Bets

After playing hookey from work yesterday ("no, really, Mr. HR Director, I was so sick [and tired of all the bullshit] I couldn't come to work") I'm back at my desk. I think I'm going to call my Dad and shoot the breeze. And Brian - we need to do another audiopost sometime.

But first - what are the odds I'll pick a winning Pepsi when I go out for lunch today? I'm taking any and all bets. And there is no sure thing - after all, Syracuse and Kansas both got taken down in first round play. (But did you see the high school sophomore from Minnesota? He shoots, he scores - from his backside on the floor!)

My iPod Is Smarter Than I Am

Here I was, printing out my library of 800 some odd song titles and comparing it to the 3,500 or so songs that Phil loaded onto the iPod for me when he gave it to me. Laboriously comparing and contrasting. Finally, I just copied and dragged, thinking "I'll remove the dups later."

Funny thing - the iPod skipped over the songs already installed! Now I just need to edit the titles and synch up between the iPod and my hard drive. Good way to fill a Saturday evening, don't you think?

Post Office Props

I finally got that package from Amazon.com yesterday.

Of course, this was after I had emailed the USPS on Wednesday, basically saying, "where the hell is my package?" I'm still not thrilled about the length of time it took to get to me, but I am pleased with the official response to my inquiry, received earlier today:

I Heart Susan

Susan just shared with me an essay she wrote for a contest to win four days in New York City including spa treatments and shopping sprees. Whether or not we win, it warms my heart to know that this is how she describes our friendship:

================================
My Girlfriends Invitation™ Essay

You know the saying "Too Much Information"? Well, that doesn't exist between Kenna (left) and me (Susan, right). We have a no-holds-barred, do-it-all, say-anything kind of friendship. We are each other's litmus test, weathervane, and conscience. We can bounce ideas off one another that we might not be willing to share with anyone else-ideas about career, family, our social lives, and especially men. Nothing that one says or does shocks or disconcerts the other. We're there for one another no matter what, fearlessly and unconditionally, through the good, the bad, and the mundane.

Both divorced, we've discovered the true value of girlfriendship that neither of us enjoyed during our marriages. Perhaps it is only when you find yourself on your own that you appreciate a friendship that endures and that comes without conditions or expectations, a friendship in which you can let down your guard and truly be yourself. We've helped each other through some hard times and have enjoyed some really great times, too. When something exciting or significant happens to one of us, the other is usually the first person she calls or-since this is the 21st century-e-mails.

This is not the most flattering photo, but it clearly depicts the spirit of our friendship: bright-eyed, big-smiled, and on the move, barely stopping long enough to grab a camera and snap a self-portrait before moving on to the next adventure. There was a man in the photo (what was his name?), but he has been cropped out. Turns out he wasn't right for either of us. Perhaps one day we'll each meet our Mr. Right, but until then-and beyond-we've got each other.

You Think?

This morning in our staff meeting, I mentioned how it would have been nice if there had been a general announcement about the fact that the president's secretary was retiring before an ad for her position was published in the newspaper. Shortly after the meeting my boss came in and said that they were going to be advertising for my position, so did I want him to tell my co-workers before the ad appeared?

Uh, yeah. And while you're at it, why don't you tell them the truth about why I am leaving? I'm not going to give him an easy out. I'm leaving because he didn't find my work satisfactory. Period. New paragraph. End of discussion. Thank you all for your attention.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! I'm so happy I think I'll finish off the rest of those Girl Scout cookies.

The Winter of My Discontent

It's snowing again. Big, fat, fluffy flakes. If it were December or January or even February I might be enthused. But it's March. March 11 to be exact, and I'm sick of winter.

And so are a lot of other folks. At least, they are using the phrase. Got a chuckle out of Suz Redfearn's 2002 column. Was saddened by Annie's thoughts from 1999. Rachel has a whole blog dedicated to pregnancy using the phrase as her title. There is some artwork which represents the feeling in a dark and somewhat disturbing way. But my favorite comes from Jane Catoe:

"Thank fucking God, I'm not in Boston ... where I spent my very own winter of discontent. Which is where I learned the hard way, by not doing it, to cut my losses and move on. Which is where I learned that not every situation can be improved. Which is where I learned that it's a bad omen if you move to a city and get cussed out the first five minutes you're there. "

She's BaaaaAAccK!

The Mary Kay Lady is back.

She wants to join this women's group I belong to, and I can't tell her that we don't want any of her kind in our clique because we're supposed to be an open and welcoming group of business and professional women. She attended our dinner meeting last night as a guest, even though originally she had told me she coudn't come because her sister had died unexpectedly over the weekend and she would be out of town with her grieving mother. And the Pink Lady was so impressed with the educational program in which I played a small role that she sent me this message this morning:

"Goodmorning Kenna! I wanted to tell you too that you are an excellent speaker! Your presentation about the College and the conection with the Women's Group was articulate, authentic and very well put! You're so talented! I know there are great things ahead for YOU!

I feel very fortunate to have met you and appreciate the extra time and interest you've taken in introducing me to the Women's Group.

Make it a miracle-filled and exceptional day!

Pink Lady

PS: Great pant suit too! You're so classy!"

Ripped From The Headlines

I really enjoy "Law & Order" - the original and all the spin-offs. The last few years I've gotten pretty lackadaisical about watching new episodes. I have the VCR set to tape every Wednesday, but I don't worry too much about whether or not I watch each new episode.

I have the television on now, tuned into L & O, and this week's storyline parallels the recent story of a judge who was threatened by a racist extremist. I'm really struck by the timing. What was it, just last week that that judge's husband and mother were murdered in Chicago?

The other noteworthy aspect of this is that Candice Bergen is playing the judge, and this isn't the first episode of L & O she's been on. Good addition to the cast, and I like that she's not a regular. It's fun to wonder when she'll show up next.

0-8

I'm trying to see it as a good thing. If I'm having such horrible luck here, then I'm bound to have good luck in other aspects of my life, right? Not that it's been a total loss - I posted a plea on the Company's electronic bulletin board, and earlier today an iPod-less person took pity on me and gave me his winning cap.

And here's a question - why does it cost more for less? The other day when I hit the vending machine, regular Diet Pepsi was sold out so I thought I'd opt for the caffeine free Diet Pepsi instead. But, no! Caffeine free Diet Pepsi costs $1.25 instead of $1.00. Can you believe it? Just like those low-carb menu items at chain restaurants - they charge more for less. I remember being at Friday's with some friends last summer and the bunless burger cost more than the regular burger. Uh, it's the same damn burger. So order the one with the bun and don't eat it already.

Americans. Paying more for less, the new national past-time.

Brr!

It's in the single digits here today, and with the wind chill it is at or below zero. Days like this make me seriously reconsider my stated desire to stay in this area ... why don't I just pick a warmer location and do my job search there?

Tuesday, March 08, 2005

0-7

Can you believe it? I can't pick a winning bottle cap to save my life.

And to top it off, it's snowing here in upstate New York. We're supposed to get six inches (or more) by the time all is said and done. Guess who will be shoveling all that snow? Me. The unemployed boy next door is off to Florida to visit his folks and Phil, well, we'll see who ends up doing the lion's share of shoveling tonight.

P.S. Happy 40th Birthday to my dear Ex! I know you opened the e-cards I sent you because I asked for return receipt. We'll see how long it takes you to acknowledge my thoughfulness, if you ever do. And you know what? I don't even care if you forget my birthday. (For the rest of you, it's May 9 so write it down!)

Fast Car

I don't know what it is about this song ... it always gets to me. For some unknown reason, it's playing on the radio right now. In some strange way, it's a day brightener for me. Maybe because I'm considering a similar future for myself - just getting in the car and driving, driving away from all my worries and problems.

0-6

Can you believe it?

Went to see "Million Dollar Baby" with Susan last night and while we were waiting for a table at the restaurant, we wandered to the drugstore next door where I purchased a 20 oz bottle of Diet Pepsi. Once again, I picked a loser. The odds are 1 in 3 that you'll win - I've now lost six in a row. Don't even bother asking how I did in Friday night's MegaMillions lottery drawing. Brian, the singing lessons will have to wait.

So about that movie ... I really enjoyed it, and not having seen the other Oscar nominated movies in which lead actresses were nominated, I'd have to say Hilary Swank did put forward an amazing performance. I'm still bothered by her mouth, though. Something about it ... her teeth are too big. Anyway, I left the theatre with a million dollar question.

What did Clint Eastwood's character, Frankie Dunn, do to anger his daughter so much that she would return his weekly letters unopened? That was harsh. Loved Brian F. O'Byrne as the priest, Father Horvak. What can I say - I'm a sucker for a tall Irishman.

Deja Vu All Over Again

Remember last year when I was obsessing about the Ex? I was all bent out of shape because he hadn't been in contact with me - hadn't even acknowledged the birthday card I sent him. And I was ruminating about how he was just repeating the life he'd led with me, but without me.

Well, he's doing it again.

I still occasionally hack his email, and when I logged in the other day, I got a good chuckle. He had a confirmation form from a travel agency. Seems like he's going on a little trip in April. To Jamaica. A Sandals resort. In Negril. Same place where we went on our honeymoon.

I pity the new girlfriend. She's being forced to relive my life and she doesn't even know it. But it's all good - see, I saw how much the trip is costing him, and I gotta tell you, the 12 day cruise I'm taking at the end of the year costs less than his 7 days in the compound. Because that's what it is. When you go to these all inclusive resorts in Jamaica, you pretty much don't leave the compound because

a) there's no place else to go and
2) there's no way to get there

Enjoy the trip, dear Ex. And if you jump off the cliff at Rick's Cafe again, be sure to show me the photos.

Damn, They're Good!

Got a nice email message from my Honda dealer reminding me that my 20,000 mile service should be coming up:

Dear Kenna,

Following the recommended maintenance schedule for your 2003 CR-V is the best way to help ensure your vehicle's optimal performance. Properly maintaining your vehicle may also help maintain its resale value. The service department at City Honda is dedicated to providing quality service using Honda Genuine Parts.

We've determined that your mileage should now be approximately 19,468. So it's time for the following service on your 2003 CR-V:

20,000 Mile Honda Recommended Maintenance

Please call us to schedule a service appointment that's convenient for you. Our service department hours are Mon - Wed : 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Thu - Fri : 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Sat : 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM By Appointment Only.

Sincerely,

Laura, John, Wayne, Gus, Geoff & George
Your Service Team

Okay, so here's the amazing thing - they were pretty darn accurate in approximating my mileage. I just came back from a 330 some odd mile trip yesterday, and my mileage is 19,977. Taking that into account, they guesstimated my mileage to within 200 miles. The amazing thing is that I don't have predictable patterns with my car. Since I walk to work, there can be days when I don't drive it at all. Weeks when the only usage I have is to drive back and forth to the gym and/or grocery store. And then there will be times, like yesterday, when I'll rack up anywhere from 300 to 500 miles.

Pretty damn amazing. Now you see why I'm such a faithful customer.

My Dad Is Sad

My parents, brother, and sister-in-law came to visit this weekend. It was not an uplifting visit.

My father was injured at work two years ago and he's never fully recovered. Not knowing the intimate details, I can only say that from a distance, it appeared as though he never got the appropriate medical care he needed right from the start. It was a messy situation - he worked for my uncle who tried to claim that he had a stroke and therefore workman's comp shouldn't cover the injury and treatment. My father was out of work for nearly a year and did not get good follow-up care.

Now he's back at work, but since he never fully recovered, it's very difficult for him. Now he's losing his balance and sometimes has double vision. Not good for a man who drives heavy equipment for a living.

So they are still fighting with workman's comp over bills and treatment and now there is talk of making him permanently disabled which sounds like it would be fine, except that he is scared to death that they will take away his driver's license. If he can't drive the big trucks, does that mean he can't drive his own vehicle?

We see the difference - in driving the big rig he needs to climb in and out of the truck repeatedly, and it's much more difficult to drive such a large vehicle. But does that mean he can't drive his own car? My father is not much of a talker to begin with, but he was practically mute this weekend. Just sitting and stewing and worrying and wondering and there's not a damn thing I can do.

Euthanasia?

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

When I was a senior in high school I took an English class where during one marking period, all we did was work on a research paper. My topic was euthanasia. Back then, it was all about Karen Ann Quinlan. A few years after I wrote that paper, my 16 year old cousin came back from overseas and very suddenly and rapidly her health deteriorated and she fell into a coma. They really never were sure what happened, but it was some sort of infection where her brain swelled.

She 'lived' that way for over 20 years. Last spring, she finally passed away.

I take it back. I do know how I feel about this. I think they should remove the tubes and machines and let her go.

********************
On another note ... as I was googling 'euthanasia' and trying to remember Karen Ann Quinlan's name, I came across this site. Are they for real?!? Some really strange stuff going on in Somerville MA ... I much prefer The Somerville Gates.

Getting My Goat

I watch the Today show every morning as I'm getting ready for work. I really do enjoy Katie, Matt, Al and Ann but this week I'm a little bothered by some of their shenanigans.

First of all, I understand that the Today show isn't news. They are part of the entertainment division. And that's what it is when I view/listen in the morning - entertainment with the actual newsbreaks serving as commercials. So I really shouldn't expect that this be hard-hitting journalism.

Case in point:

They ran a little series this week on trading places. I don't even know what they called it - it was so important that they didn't even highlight it on the website - but basically members of 'America's First Family' all tried their hand at a different occupation for a day. Now, I really didn't expect them to tackle anything tough or truly meaningful. I mean, I wouldn't want an inexperienced person providing health care or processing my business loan or repairing the wiring in my home.

So I give Matt Lauer props for going to work with members of the Department of Sanitation. He got down and dirty hauling trash. And this after last week's week-long series on germs. Apparently Matt is a real germ-o-phobe so his hitching a ride on the back of a garbage truck and slinging dog shit and avoiding 'disco rice' (maggots) was truly a test of his character.

Ann did something with a stunt plane pilot and Al tried his hand at dealing blackjack. Big whoop. But this morning's clip with Katie really got my goat.

I actually liked Katie Couric but now I'm beginning to think not so much. I don't dislike her, I'm just losing a little bit of respect for her because, well, she's going Hollywood. The designer clothes, the jet-setting trips, the appearances in movies and sitcoms - she's going Hollywood baby. So this morning she tried to pick something real and down to earth. She went to a goat farm to see what it was all about.

Had she gone to a regular goat farm I wouldn't have been bothered. But no - she had to go to a designer goat farm! That's right - the goat farm she chose to visit was Coach Farm. Coach Farm is the retirement dream for Miles Cahn and his wife, Lillian, founders of the Coach Handbag Co. (or Coach Leatherware; not exactly sure what the full original name of the company was). They sold the company to Sara Lee in 1985 and retired to the Coach Farm in Pine Plains, about two hours north of New York City.

And that was where Katie chose to go milk the goats. You could tell that the staff didn't think much of her. She was trying to chit-chat with one of the workers, a woman who I don't think spoke much English, and the woman just sort of ignored her. But Katie giggled and tee-heed her way through the bit. No doubt about it - Coach Farm makes great cheese and it's a fascinating story in and of itself. Miles and Lillian Cahn, who are 84 and 82 years old respectively, genuinely love their little farm. But somehow I think it was cheapened by Katie's visit.

I've got a whole other rant on how I was duped by their series on autism, but that will have to wait for another post.

0-5

I specifically bought a 20 oz bottle of Diet Pepsi at lunch today, thinking "I'm 0-4; this one has got to be a winner." Nope. I'm now 0-5 in the hunt for a winning Pepsi iTunes bottle cap.

So Close!

You know how I have these fantasies of winning the lottery? Well, last week I got an email message saying my email address was one of ten chosen from 50 million and I had won $1,000,000. Imagine my excitement! Of course, I immediately suspected it was a scam, but something made me take the bait and at least respond to that first email.

I said "Sure, send me my $1,000,000" and waited. The response I got follows. As expected, they are 'requesting' a processing fee of $850 euros and proof of my identity. I should have known by the name of the law firm that it was all a hoax - "BejusbejusLaw"? All I can think is "BeJesus" or "Beetlejuice" But hey, if anyone else wants to front the $850 euros in the hopes of scoring $1,000,000, be my guest:

Gmail's Siren Song

I have a gmail account and the lure was 1G of space - no need to trash anything! Ever!

Yeah, right.

How did I manage to already use up 5% of that gig of space? And that's without spam, which fortunately has been almost non-existent in my gmail accounts. How is it that I've already used 46MB of space? It's because I don't bother trashing anything. Exchange a few photos, swap a song or two and all of a sudden, that gig of space doesn't look so big anymore.

Sigh.

One more thing in my life that I need to unclutter.

What Are The Odds?

Last year, when I did not own an iPod, I got oodles of those winning Pepsi caps. This year, now that I have an iPod, I can't pick a winner to save my life. The bottle proclaims that "1 in 3 Wins a FREE Song on iTunes" yet I've now purchased four such bottles and not a single winner.

WTF?

The Somerville Gates

A former Bostonian shared this with me - a miniature installation of The Gates. Not as imposing at The Gates in Central Park, but inspired nonetheless.

Forced Productivity

Being a state worker, I have the day off today, so I'm home and not On Company Time. When I went to fire up the computer this morning - nothing. My internet connection was out. For about a half hour there, I thought I would be forced to address the issues I've avoided for the past two days - the remainder of the Christmas decorations, the sheets and towels I need to wash before my family comes to visit this weekend, the half-hearted attempt to puruse the classified ads for a new job, the preparation of my paperwork for taxes, the survey of the kitchen to see what I need at the grocery store etc. But as you can see, my connection is back up and once again I have a way to avoid what really matters in life. Interestingly enough, though, I do think I'm actually going to tackle those issues after I publish this post.

It snowed overnight, and is still snowing now. The weather forecasters have finally settled on a prediction - three to six inches. For a while there, it was anything from 5-10 to 4-8. I can handle six inches. [Insert your euphemism comment here.]

I may have fixed my computer issues. The final step was downloading Firefox which I am now using as my browser [insert Barrie's chortle of glee here]. I had downloaded Firefox about a year ago, but when I had monitor issues last April, the technician removed it from my hard drive, and I just hadn't bothered to reinstall. The morons at work insist on using Lotus Notes for everything (including web page production and editing - can you believe it?!?), and the only way to remotely access email was to use IE. I suddenly realized that I didn't give a flying fuck about my work email when I was at home, so I don't need to use IE, do I? Besides, those of you in the know have my personal gmail address and/or phone, so if you really wants to get in touch with me when I'm not On Company Time, you know how.

Harder Than It Has To Be

Why do I make things harder than they have to be?

All I needed to do was take down the last of the Christmas decorations, the lighted garlands around my windows and running down the steps. Simple, right? Not in this house. I had to bring up the Rubbermaid totes that I store things in. The totes were covered in dust from being in the old dirt part of the basement all last year. I had to rinse them off, didn't I? And then, after I'd carefully removed the last of the decorations and stowed the garlands in the totes, when I went to put them back where they belonged, I couldn't just put them in the corner, could I?

No, I had to get out the broom and try to sweep up some of the dust. I don't know where it comes from, but it's this fine dust that immediately swirls in the air and creates a choking cloud. I literally can see it on my clothes.

I still haven't finished putting things away.

Live and Learn

Reason # 69 for not visiting p*rn sites: your computer gets infected with all sorts of spyware and pop-up advertisements and you can't get rid of them even after you've downloaded the most recent version and run SpyBot five times.

Any other freeware I should try?

UPDATE: I downloaded AdAware and after two hours, one unintended nap, 200,000+ files scanned and 199 critical objects found, I thought I had resolved the problem. Performance seemingly back to normal, but wouldn't you know - I'm still getting the damn pop-ups! And there is this annoying search box that keeps peeking up from my bottom taskbar. Grr. I'll keep working on it.

Temporary High

I've never had an addiction. I drink occasionally and I don't smoke or do drugs. I don't even drink coffee, although I do sometimes feel a need for caffeine which I get through drinking diet coke/pepsi (I don't really discern between the two - I'll take whatever is offered). I can count the number of times I've smoked pot on one hand.

But I do know what it feels like to crave something and the rush you get when you've indulged in your desire. In that moment, chocolate has never tasted so good, strawberries have never smelled as sweet, and your body has never felt this good. You are strong, confident, and assertive. On top of the world. Nothing can bring you down.

And then it happens. The temporary high is gone and you come tumbling down. Sometimes like a leaf, floating and twisting and turning in the breeze. Sometimes like a dead weight that's been dropped from high above.

I indulged in a temporary high last night, and now I'm coming down. Softly floating like that leaf turning in the wind. It's been a gentle landing, and I don't feel much regret at all.

I Had A Dream ...

... actually, it was more like a nightmare!

I don't usually remember my dreams, but knowing that my housemate was going to be leaving at 4:30 a.m. for the airport, I slept fitfully and remembered this one. In fact, I think I was in that netherworld where you can actually direct your dreams, and so I forced a particular outcome.

Anyway, it was about the damn Mary Kay lady. Suddenly this small lunch to which I've been invited got transformed into this Mary Kay revival at my house. At first it was just a few ladies, but then more and more of them were showing up and they were overrunning the place. And trampling all over everything and they wouldn't leave and I was expecting the owners of the house to show up any time and so I did the only thing I could do to get their attention - I took something away from one of their babies and it started howling and screaming and I got their attention and told them yes, indeed, I had taken candy from a baby. I was that kind of person - obviously not the type of woman they wanted to hang around with, so really, could they all please leave?

Now That's A Valentine

Got a Valentine's greeting from Southwest Airlines; too bad the spam filter here at work blocked it. I'm just now reviewing all the blocked messages from the past week. Almost makes up for the Hallmark fiasco.

Speaking of which, Michael and I were supposed to go to a movie on Saturday, but last night he emailed me to say that he'd forgotten that he'd promised to take his son to the high school basketball sectionals on Saturday. I wonder if this is his way of gracefully exiting my life?

Nah, nothing is that easy.

Help!

A Mary Kay Cosmetics consultant has captured me in her crosshairs and tomorrow I'm going to be subjected to a networking luncheon, followed by a portfolio photo session.

Mary Kay consultants - on the rung just above snake oil salesmen and boiler room brokers.

Shut Up Already

I've barely been here ten minutes and already Chatty Cathy (the one who is engaged) is driving me crazy. She was out of the office yesterday and it was so blessedly quiet. Now she's in the office next door relating the details of her trip yesterday in mind-numbing detail, and of course because she is so LOUD I can hear every word. Sometimes I just want to throttle her.

Do I sound like a cranky old lady or what?

In other news, I haven't seen my housemate since Monday. His latest conquest is in town for a few days, and after he cooked dinner for her Monday night, they slipped out of the house and I haven't seen him since. Apparently she had a hotel room which is where he stayed Monday night. I can only assume that's where he was Tuesday night and last night. I didn't even bother leaving a light on for him last night.

I heard him come in around 8:30 this morning, just before I left for work. He didn't call out to greet me, and I didn't call out to greet him. He's headed to Florida tomorrow with his daughter for winter break, so I'll have the house to myself for a whole week. I carefully concealed that fact from Michael when I met him yesterday afternoon - if he knew that Phil wasn't around you can bet that he'd be stopping by frequently. And I just don't want to go there.

Managed to politely decline his invitation to go away for an overnight. Which really sucks because I'd love to be whisked away to parts unknown by a lover if only for a single night. But Michael is not my lover and will probably never be my lover, so going anywhere with him for an overnight would just be pointless and futile.

We Apologize ...

... this just in from Hallmark.com - an apology for their crappy service on Monday.

I, for one, wish that they hadn't delivered a certain Valentine. Being the occasionally super-organized person that I am, sometime in January, when I was still feeling good about the budding relationship, I scheduled a Valentine's card for Michael. Then we had that little rough spot wherein he walked out on me for the third time and I thought it was Over with a capital O but he was back on email barely three days later saying "I miss you."

And I forgot I'd sent the card. And on Monday, it got delivered. It took him ALL DAY to get that sucker, but eventually he did. And now he thinks I'm really interested in pursuing him again.

Not.

We're meeting after work today, and I'm going to have to pass on the offer to go away for the weekend - the one he took back after that rough spot but which he re-issued after getting that lovely little Valentine.

Thanks a lot, Hallmark. Your apology is too little too late.

Happy Valentine's Day

In honor of this special day, my friend R gave me an orgasm.

Oh, What A Night!

The party was a huge success!

The count was up to 133 by early Friday afternoon, and the restaurant owner was literally turning people away. With walk-ins and latecomers, I'd guess there were 150 people there. From what I saw and heard, everyone had a great time. The band was awesome, and the food was spectacular. Everything exceeded my wildest expectations.

We got home around 12:30 and someone ordered pizza. I didn't think I was hungry, but I wolfed down two slices and it was around 2:30 by the time I got to bed. I knew I would wake up early, and sure enough, the headache was pounding by 5:30 a.m. I really didn't think I'd had that much to drink, but it felt like a hangover coming on. I took a handful (okay, three) of ibuprofen and hoped that the headache would go away. No such luck. I threw up for the first time half an hour later.

I tried drinking some liquid. Threw up some more. By that time Michelle was up and she encouraged me to drink some more. Threw up again. Susan got up and we chatted for awhile, and then we all tried to go back to sleep. Threw up for the third time. Everyone was awake again, and we actually all piled into my king sized bed (okay, two twins shoved together) and watched television and talked about the party. My mom called, and Michelle answered before passing the phone to Susan, who chatted briefly before passing the phone to me.

I tried drinking more liquid. Threw up yet again. Phil came downstairs and said I should try some juice, and maybe a cracker. Michelle left, and Susan was getting ready to go. Tried drinking the juice, said goodbye to Susan, and threw up again. Switched back to the clear soda, and took a phone call from Vicki. By this time it is going on 12:30 and I have been upchucking for nearly five hours.

Threw up one last wretched and, thankfully, final, time. I knew it was the final effort because it was pure bile. Crawled back into bed and dozed. Sipped a little soda, and when a whole hour went by without puking, I dared to try to eat a little banana - Phil said the potassium would help. Managed to keep three bites of banana down for an hour, and then ate three more bites. Over the course of the next few hours, I managed to eat the entire banana. Slept, watched television and just rested.

Later in the afternoon I kept down some saltines and more soda. Around 8:00 p.m. I had a small bowl of Cheerios. By 9:00, I turned out the light and went to sleep. Not the way I wanted to spend the day after such a fantastic night. Not sure what hit me - this definitely was not a hangover. Something I ate totally disagreed with me. The chex snack mix with wasabi peas? The pizza? The grapes? Or was it the mixing of fruity martinis with White Russians and rum and cokes?

No matter - nothing can take away from Friday night. Here's what I looked like before the barf bash (bare bear with me while I try to remember how to insert an image tag):

Va-Va-Voom!

Yes, I know. I've 'outed' myself by showing a picture of The Face. And The Body. But honestly, if you looked that absafuckinlutely awesome, you'd show it off too, wouldn't you?

Uh-Oh

Just went to the ladies room and went I went to unzip my pants - realized they had never been zipped. Uh-oh. Luckily I'm wearing a sweater over my pants, so I don't think anyone noticed.

Full house here at work - the one who is engaged had no excuse for not showing up. Heh-heh. Rain did change over to snow but just barely - the temperature was 31.6 degrees when I left the house this morning.

Psyche!

All that snow they predicted? Haven't seen any of it yet. The temperature remained above freezing and all it has done is rain. The temperature is dropping now so we'll get freezing rain turning into snow during the upcoming rush hour. It will be interesting to see who shows up at the office later this morning.

Good thing, too - my housemate Phil apparently spent the night at his girlfriend's place. I'll be damned if I was going to get up early and shovel so he could stroll in later this morning. What's the sense in having a male housemate if you have to do all the snow shoveling?

Freaking Out

The one who is engaged is freaking out about the weather forecast. She said this morning "don't expect to see me tomorrow!" She gets all freaked out about driving in snow. Hello ... we live in upstate New York.

I know that you are young and you don't have much experience driving, let alone driving in the snow, but how do you expect to get experience if you refuse to even try? Her fiance took her out in a parking lot a month or so ago and showed her how to start and stop and steer into a skid. I thought she had gained some confidence. Then again, this could just be a convenient excuse to take a day off.

Hmmm ... come to think of it, I may be starting to feel a little under the weather myself ...

The Big Dig

Looks like we're gonna get walloped with another winter storm. They are now predicting about a foot of snow when all is said and done. I just knew that last weekend, with brilliant sunshine and temperatures in the high 40s was too good to be true.

Feeding The Need

I did it. I talked Brian through the process of turning on his site feed. Now you can subscribe to his feed via BlogRolling or BlogLines or any other similar RSS service.

Yeah, me!

Wow, start fiddling around with your settings and you'll never know what you'll find. Here I thought that ScooterDeb, Brian and Barrie were premium members and that's why they were able to customize their Haloscan comments. Little did I know that if you drill down into the settings, you too can customize your comment prompts.

It's the little things that make me happy.

Alexander and the Terrible Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Aren't you glad that this is the total opposite of my day?

My boss actually asked me to do something today. He's giving a presentation on the 24th and he wants to do it with PowerPoint. Could I talk him through it? Gee, Boss, why don't I just do it for you? I'm not really skilled with the program, but if I open it up and spend a few minutes playing around, I can figure it out. And my boss, well, he had to have someone else program his cell phone for him.

So by the time I got around to working on it (preparing bid sheets for the silent auction at tomorrow's event took precedence) it only took me half an hour to whip up a dozen slides. I emailed it to The Boss and ducked out for lunch. When I came back, he was sufficiently impressed. Then he showed me some handouts from a conference he'd been at, and asked me to replicate (i.e. totally copy and rip off) some slides from that. Including a photo of a little old lady who gave a bunch of money to some other organization.

Faster than you can type her name into Google images, I found the photo and created the extra slides. He was blown away, and I left early for my haircut feeling like I'd actually accomplished something today.

So, got my hair cut and colored. I'm totally blonde again, and I now have a fashionable bob. Susan met me at the shop and we went together to a fantastic wine bar where we met another friend, MJ. We split a bottle of wine and a series of tapas type appetizers and talked for two hours. It was a great girl's night out. Except for that moment when we were talking as girls are wont to do, and MJ asked me about the first guy I slept with after my separation.

Without batting an eye, I told her it was John. In reality, it was my friend R - the guy she is now dating after I introduced the two of them at my last party. I think she knew, or at least strongly suspected, that I was lying. But it's not my place to tell her. It was just one friend comforting another - he was there for me in my time of need and we reached out to one another.

It's fascinating, really. He was just there for me, and that occasionally included having sex. And then I got past the worst of it, and we just stopped having sex and went back to being friends - minus the benefits. If you think that men and women can't be friends after they stop having sex, you're wrong - it is possible.

So tomorrow - the big event. Lunch with Dr. Ruth. Is it any wonder we were talking about sex over drinks? I'm in charge of the silent auction, so I have to show up at 9:30 and will be there until at least 3:30. Normally, that would be fine, but tomorrow temperatures are supposed to climb well into the 40s. I'd much rather be out and about. But hey, maybe Dr. Ruth can give me some pointers.

As if I need them.

90 Minute Detour

All I wanted to do was download the song of the week.

But iTunes has been acting up on me, and it keeps telling me I should download the latest update 4.0.7.1 or something like that. I tried, but kept getting an error. And then I couldn't even freakin' find the iTunes application on my computer.

So I did what no man would do. I read the directions.

I went to the support page and entered my error message:

1607: Unable to install InstallShield scripting RunTime

First I exposed all the hidden files. Then I tried running something at the command level. Didn't work. Read the instructions further. Discovered that sometimes doesn't work with XP. Checked the properties on the update I wanted to install. Determined which installer I needed. Tried to install. Couldn't because something else was using the program. Shut down and restarted. Tried again. Able to download and install the patch I needed. Shut down and restarted again. Double clicked the install shortcut and held my breath. It worked.

As much of a pain in the ass it was to go on this 90 minute detour, I'm proud of myself. I actually enjoy the challenge of trying to figure out how to make something work. I am a frustrated techie at heart. I really want to be a troubleshooter. I want to be able to train people to use technology to their advantage. I know this is what I want to do. I just need to find a way to put that into a cover letter and resume and somehow sneak past all the people who actually have experience doing this and convince the powers that be that even though I couldn't describe the process to you, I could follow the directions and make it work, and even better - I could and would happily do it for a fellow employee and that makes me ten times more valuable that your computer geek with the technical skills and zero personality and customer service skills.

I'll let you know if I like the song of the week.

Where's My T-Shirt?

Just got a phone call from Phil. He's in DC at the sold-out Keane concert. The band I turned him on to ... while I appreciate the 30 second serenade, what I'd really like is some concert swag.

i heart ny

My life mirrors an episode from Sex and the City.

Carrie finds out that Big is leaving New York. She wants to have one last night on the town with him, but ...

I got an email from Larry this morning. He's been busy and is getting ready to move. He says he's humbled by the many friends he's made over the past eight years. He's trying to spend as much time as possible with family, and some of his friends had a farewell party for him.

My invitation must have gotten lost in the mail.

Actually, the kind of farewell that Larry wants from me ... well, that's better done in private anyway, doncha think?

The Perfect Kiss

Sorry folks - this was supposed to go to my new blog ... apparently you can only audiopost to one blog. I thought I'd changed my settings to go to the new blog, but ... will work it out.

Still - enjoy.

I Just Might Do It

I've been thinking/talking about it for the last year - taking some sort of extravagant vacation to celebrate turning 40 this year. I saw an ad in my AAA magazine for a cruise on the Queen Mary 2. Twelve days in the Caribbean. I mentioned it to my faithful sidekick Susan.

I think we're going to do it.

Happy Blogiversary To Me

It's official - my blog is one year old.

It Just Keeps Getting Better

Life is swirling around me.

So ... my dinner date with Michael. I have a feeling you haven't heard the end of this drama. He apologized for running out on me last Saturday. He doesn't want to lose my friendship. He swears that he can handle casually dating me. I just kept reminding him that actions speak louder than words. We'll wait and see.

He dropped me off after dinner and I immediately changed my clothes and went back out into the cold. I'm co-hosting a party on Feb 11 at a local restaurant, and the owner invited me to stop by for his Latin jazz night.

When I arrived the owner told me to go chat with a woman at the end of the bar. "She's waiting for friends; keep her company." Sure - I was by myself and didn't want to stick out like a sore thumb either. So we start chatting and it turns out she was waiting for her co-workers. She works at a company that I'd like to work for ... when the co-workers arrived, she introduced me to the owner ... who just so happens to live on my street. I have no idea what will come of it, if anything, but I fully intend on sending my resume next week.

And then, as I was getting ready to leave, a man walked in. Someone who I know I've seen downtown frequently. So I went up to him and asked his name. There was a reason he looked familiar. He's an artist of some renown who I saw speak at a function years ago. He also happens to have grown up in the area where I grew up - we went to the same high school! And get this - he's now divorced.

I promptly invited him to the Feb 11 party.

Brrrr!

Minus 15 this morning. No wind chill factor. And yes, I did walk to work!

Okay, I just know you're going to give me grief, but here goes.

I'm having dinner with Michael tonight.

Despite the fact that on three separate occasions he has gotten upset and simply walked out on me. Despite the fact that, as Susan so astutely says in my new tagline, "...this guy has baggage that's just too heavy to lift, or drag."

Call me a masochist, but I just gotta see what he comes up with next.

Besides, he owes me dinner. Ever since I first met and flirted with this guy on December 16, all I've gotten is:

* 12/23 - an afternoon visit that stretched into the evening during which I made him dinner (okay, pizza, but still); nice long visit that ended abruptly after I told him that I had a standing offer from John to "service" me whenever I needed a tune-up
* 12/30 - another afternoon visit that included a walk downtown for drinks and appetizers; visit stretched out for nearly nine hours and ended when I admitted I'd had dinner with Larry the day before
* 1/7 - an evening visit/cuddle on the couch - no sudden ending!
* 1/8 - an afternoon/overnight visit during which we cooked dinner together
* 1/13 - a lunch date
* 1/22 - a planned movie/dinner date which he unceremoniously cancelled (the aforementioned third instance of his walking out on me)when I admitted that I'd had dinner with a" friend" (Larry) the night before

[NOTE: I'm not counting the two afternoons (1/17 and 1/19) of snuggling in between the lunch date and the planned movie/dinner date. It was last week when I was sick and congested. Lying on top of the bed with me and snuggling while I sniffle does not constitute a date. But it's probably part of the reason he got so ripped when he found out I'd gone out to dinner with someone else ...]

And he wonders why I'm not prepared to pledge my undying love and total commitment to him. I'm making him take me to the seafood extravaganza at one of my favorite restaurants.

Let's see if he walks out on me tonight...

Brr!

It is minus 6 degrees here today. Luckily, no wind and therefore no wind chill factor. Sources say that it's anywhere between 20 and 40 below with the wind chill factor up where Jenica lives. I say stay home and cuddle with the cats!

26 More Years?

Can it be? Will I still be working 26 years from now?

I just got off the phone with a 66 year old woman who said she was in the process of changing jobs and she really didn't have time to see me. Sixty six years old. And still working. Is this what I have to look forward to?

I'm trying to do my job, which means I have to cold call prospects and try to convince them to meet with me. Once I convince them to meet with me, I'm supposed to present a compelling case for financial support of this fine institution.

Even if I had been able to get an appointment with her, this woman is sixty-six years old and still working. Like she's going to have some disposable income to throw my way.

It's just too damn depressing.

A Communication Has Been Received

Special note to Barrie: I got your package.

And in other news ... yesterday I also received an envelope from Michael. He had gone home on Saturday, put the three photos I'd given him in an envelope, taken it to the post office, got it in Saturday afternoon's mail, and it was in my mailbox by yesterday. No return address. No note. Just my photos.

Boy, is he pissed!

Coincidence?

It just occurred to me that now that Michael has dumped me, the sinus pain and pressure I've been feeling for the past week has disappeared.

Coincidence? I think not.

Sloppy

We all just got a one line email from the man in charge of mail distribution at this organization. If you're only sending a one sentence message, don't you think you could make it a little cleaner than this:

"Due to conditions beyond our control they will not be any mail delievered today."

And in other news ... I think it's over with Michael. We were supposed to get together over the weekend and he drove all the way over to my place and within five minutes asked me what I had done the night before. When I told him that I'd had a dinner date, he ended it right then and there. Wouldn't stay and talk about it, didn't want to hear an explanation, asked me for his photos back, and left. He did send me an email message three hours later, saying how hard it was for him to leave but he didn't understand how he wasn't enough for me, how I could continue seeing other people, how he'd hoped it would become serious between us and how I would become a part of his kids' lives and how he wished he could say that he wanted to remain friends, but he didn't, so there.

But if I know anyone who might be interested in dating him, I should let him know.

If you're a mousy woman who wants to be smothered and controlled by a very loving and tender-hearted 51 year old man who can't get it up, let me know and I'll put you in touch with Michael.

Snowed In

Yeah, I'm snowed in.

Not sure how much snow actually fell - 8 or 10 inches? It looks cold out there. I won't be going to the gym today - I'll get plenty of exercise just shoveling snow.

TOTH

That's Amanda-speak for "Thump On The Head" and that's just what I got last night.

I put in my 40 minutes on the elliptical trainer and another 20 minutes down in the weight room and I was all hot and sweaty and smelly and ready to go home. I bent down to tie my boots and when I stood up - WHAM! I hit the bottom of an open locker door so hard that I knocked it off the hinges.

Luckily, I'm pretty hard headed and I must have hit that sucker just right because I didn't even break the skin - no blood. The gym staff was pretty quick to come to my aid (there was a woman in the locker room who alerted them to the accident - if I'd been alone I'm not sure I would have even said anything) and quickly gave me an ice pack. And wrote out an accident report. As they cautioned me about driving and urged me to go to the emergency room if I felt dizzy or had blurred vision or felt nauseous, it did occur to me that I had just whacked myself pretty good.

Went home and dutifully called the gym to let them know that I'd arrived home safely, iced my head and took some ibuprofen. I really don't even have much of a bump - I only noticed it when I stood against the wall - it's right where the back of my head touches.

I'm tired, but I'm not going to let that stop me from going out to dinner with Larry tonight.

Hmmm.....

A workman just came in my office and replaced the filter in my heating/ac unit. That's the first time I ever recall seeing that happen ... it didn't even occur to me that there was a filter in there.

So, five years without having a new air filter - you don't think THAT has anything to do with my congestion/respiratory problems, do you?

Dammit!

Just checked our numbers and we didn't win the MegaMillions.

But thanks for sharing the love just the same. In case you are wondering, there was one lucky winner of the $130,000,000 jackpot and the ticket was sold in Georgia. There were 23 second prize winners of $175,000 and three of those winners were here in New York (Long Island). Next time I'm in Wantagh I'll get my ticket at Cori's Gift & Stationery Shop or I'll stop by Path Liquors in Coram or the 7-Eleven on Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station.

Yeah, right.

Bad News, Good News

The bad news is I just checked my numbers, and I didn't win the MegaMillions jackpot on Friday.

The good news is neither did anyone else, so tonight's drawing is $130 million.

Come on, people - show me the love.

Special note to Brian, Amanda, ScooterDeb, John and Barrie - you're already in for $1 million each but if you care to renew your vows of adoration and adulation, there's another million in it for you.

Better Than I Know Myself

I know that the men in my life get nervous when I tell them that I share everything with my friend Susan. They get even more nervous when they realize that I could very easily just forward their email to her - or to anyone else. I suppose I should think twice before I do it - what if one of them forwarded my messages to others? But I guess that's the risk you take whenever you commit pen to paper, or cursor to screen.

So even though I've tried to keep the private things between me and Michael private, I just had to share this with you. It's both amazing and frightening that he's been observing me this closely:

"It's easy to remember your usual order at Boston Market(1/4 dark w/2 sides-usually green beans&sweet potatoes), or your cat Bandit with a patch of black fur around the eye, or that you don't like ketchup or any red sauce, or that you love seafood but not clams, oysters or mussels or that your mom drives a school bus and your dad was injured working for your uncle. It's important to me to remember these little things because their all part of who you are. I also learned that body language describes what makes up an individual. Like the way your eyes fill up with tears when you talk about you dad. It tells me that there's a deep love for someone that continues to have a strong influence in your life. And what about those Kenna Fearing sighs. Like the ones that say "I didn't think he was ready to here that yet", or the one that says "This is nice , I feel very comfortable right now" or my favorite " I like spending time with you Michael".

Not So Fast

In an effort to clear off my desk and get ready for a three day weekend (yeah, it's only 9:42 and already I'm thinking ahead to not coming in on Monday), I decided to check the numbers on my Mega Millions lottery ticket. I bought it on Wednesday in a Thruway rest stop, and I just wanted to double check to be sure before throwing it out.

But wait ... hold the presses! The ticket I bought is for tonight's drawing. I'm still in the running to win $111 million. That's right - $111 million.

You know the drill - show me the love.

Fast Car

Just heard that song by Tracy Chapman on the radio. I've always loved the sound of her voice.

I can't even really express what I think/feel when I hear this particular song. You know how some songs are touch stones for you - they evoke memories of certain time or phase in your life? I've just always liked that song ... the mixture of hope and despair all at the same time.

.....

Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
But me myself I got nothing to prove

.....

I remember we were driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

.....

You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so you can fly away
You gotta make a decision
You leave tonight or live and die this way

How Is That Possible?

So I was on the road today and got home about an hour ago and just turned on the television for some background noise. ET was on, and there was a story about Oprah Winfrey and her weight. They said that she weighs 163 pounds and is a size 10.

How is that possible?

I'm 5'8" and currently weigh about 155 pounds. There is NO WAY I am a size 10. I'm a 12 - and I still have 14s that I occasionally wear. Is Oprah Winfrey that much taller than me? I just can't imagine that she weighs that much and is a size 10.

Unless all the fancy designers she favors label their 12s and 14s as size 10.

Hey!

Search that led you to my blog: "turning 40 sucks"

I resemble the association ...

What Up?

Can you believe I haven't posted in three whole days? And no one sent a search and rescue team to my home? Some kind of friends you turned out to be!

Okay, so Saturday there was a snow storm, but still I braved the weather to be with Michael. I went over to his house and we heated things up - in the kitchen you dirty minded readers! - by making what is now one of my favorite winter recipes, Corn and Cod Chowder. And then we watched a movie ... well, part of a movie ... and since there was a raging snow storm outside, there was no way that I could drive myself home, so I spent the night. Enough said.

Wandered back home on Sunday and had enough energy to go to the gym before wasting the better part of the afternoon just faffing around the house. Still haven't taken my decorations down. Haven't even started.

[possibly more later when I feel more inspired]

The Voice and The Hair

The Sunny Side of the Street

Today I spent some time walking on the sunny side of the street.

Literally. Although as soon as I wrote that I suddenly realized that my stroll had figurative meaning as well. After a nasty winter storm yesterday, the sun was out today and temperatures climbed back above freezing. I found my spirits rising with the temperature.

Last night Phil and I hosted a colleague for dinner. Bob used to live and work here in town, but he's been in RaChaCha for the last 20 years. He took a new position with our employer and is moving back to town. He also used to work for the same employer that Phil and I used to work for, and he is divorced, so we have much in common.

Shared my work woes with him, and he gave me some good advice. Better yet, he's going to put me in touch with someone who might be able to help me find a new job. It was all so civilized ... preparing a tray of cheese, crackers and fruit while Phil sliced the vegetables for the stir fry. Opening a bottle of wine and relaxing with it on the sofa. Enjoying dessert after dinner. I felt replete when I retired for the evening.

Managed to accomplish a few things today, none of it really work related. I'll be staying a few minutes late for a conference call ... more on that later.

Michael will be giving me a call this evening to see if he can drop by and then we'll finalize our plans for tomorrow. He totally bounced back and he's in the game! Apparently he's been taking lessons from "Kenna's Guide to Dating" because he is suddenly being very direct and clear about what he wants. Good for him. Doesn't mean he'll get it, but good for him!

Larry was out of town earlier in the week which was why I hadn't heard from him. He said he'd like to "say hello" sometime this weekend but that he already had a commitment for Saturday. Me too! I'll see how I feel on Sunday and maybe give him a call. Or maybe not. Sometimes a little space is good.

Today's Oxymoron

"It sounds like things are looking good for you."

Don't Look Now ...

... but someone got promoted.

Now I Know Why

Now I know why I don't get up and go for a brisk walk in the morning.

Because in the early pre-dawn hours, when the temperature has dropped to just below freezing and there is a very light, fine snow falling, you can't see the ice underneath and when you hit a patch of ice and go skidding - not fun.

Guess I'll just have to use the treadmill in the basement instead.

WTF?

My local radio station is playing "Undercover Angel."
How the hell did that get into the afternoon mix?

Still In The Game

Well, you already knew that I was a little impatient.

Turns out if I'd waited just a few hours longer on Sunday, I would have heard from Michael. We were playing the same game. He was waiting to hear from me and I was waiting to hear from him. He blinked first.

He sent me an email message to which I responded, and then yesterday I got a really great reply that prompted me to pick up the phone and call him. We had a nice chat and we're going to get together this weekend. He said he was free Friday night and Saturday, and I tried to get him to agree to Friday, but I think he would prefer that I come over to his place on Saturday. He may even try to score both evenings - call me at the last minute on Friday saying "since I'm in town" and then still get me over to his lair on Saturday. At least, that's what I would do!

And now it's Larry who is MIA. We had that lovely sleepover on Saturday and he slipped out of the house shortly after dawn on Sunday. I sent him a message late Sunday evening, something that he would have first thing Monday morning since we'd sort of gotta into that groove - he enjoyed checking his email first thing in the morning and seeing a message from me. To date - no response. I'm not going to take it personally - he has a lot of things going on what with preparing for an impending move to Texas.

I've been trying to focus here at work, but I'm not having much luck. There are several different projects sitting here on my desk, but no real urgency to any of them. So there they sit. And here I sit - blogging On Company Time.

It's good to be back.

"Let The Game Come To You"

That's what Michael told me the other night.

He was the assistant coach of a low-level Division III basketball team for a few years, and he told me that sometimes when the players were trying too hard, he'd tell them "Let the game come to you." (I'm sure FashionHound will appreciate the analogy.)

As I may have mentioned, Michael has been out of circulation for a long time. He was married and even though he's been separated for seven years, he hasn't gone out much. He said he was just looking to get to know and spend some time with someone, and apparently I was his first foray into the dating world. And here I am, looking to set land-speed records in the dating world. So he basically told me to settle down, not be in a rush - let the game come to me.

Well, after sending him a follow-up email Thursday night, and calling to leave a New Year's greeting on his cell phone, I haven't heard "boo" from Michael.

Larry, on the other hand, returned my New Year's call at nearly the stroke of midnight (totally unexpected) and suggested he would touch base with me on New Year's Day. Which he did. I went over to his place after dinner for a few hours, and then he came back over here to spend the night with me.

Game on. Too bad for Michael it's not with him.

Closet Cleansing

Out with the old and in with the new.

With Susan's help, I'm off to an auspicious start. She was brutal as she ripped through my closets.

"Are you kidding me? Look at the pit stains on this."

"I've always hated this dress. There's no shape to it."

"Look at how that's all pilled up - do you still wear that? Please don't tell me you wear that."

She flew through both closets and built four stacks of clothes on the end of my bed. I knew it needed to be done, but I just didn't have the strength to do it. Now I'm ready to take on the new year.

A fresh start. And clean closets.

Happy New Year!
